The University of St Andrews Tops Rankings in 2024

The University of St Andrews, where Lady Louise Windsor is currently a student, has every reason to celebrate as it recently earned the top spot in the 2024 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide ranking. This prestigious Scottish institution, attended in the past by the Prince and Princess of Wales, beat out renowned universities like Oxford and Cambridge, which came in second and third place, respectively. As the most trusted quality indicator of undergraduate study at UK universities, the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide recognizes their exceptional academic standard.

A Landmark Achievement for St Andrews

St Andrews’ achievement marks the first time in over a decade that the university has secured the top position in the ranking. Its success is further emphasized by also topping the recently released 2024 Guardian University Guide. This extraordinary feat positions St Andrews as the only UK university, apart from Oxbridge, to lead both major UK higher education league tables in the same year. The recognition comes as a testament to the university’s commitment to excellence in providing an outstanding educational experience.

Lady Louise Windsor, at the age of 19, is now preparing for her second year at the University of St Andrews. Pursuing her passion for English, she follows in the footsteps of her cousin Prince William, who graduated from the university with a Master of Arts degree in geography in 2005. Similarly, her cousin-in-law Princess Kate also obtained a Master of Arts degree in history of art in the same year. Lady Louise’s choice of St Andrews reflects not only its esteemed academic reputation but also a strong family connection.

Accommodation and University Life

During her initial year at university, Lady Louise resided in one of the halls of residence, a common experience for most undergraduates. In the upcoming two years of her course, however, she will be responsible for finding her own accommodation. When Prince William and Princess Kate first enrolled at St Andrews, they lived at St Salvator’s Halls of Residence, known as Sallies. However, in their subsequent years, they decided to rent a two-storey Victorian terraced house, specifically 13A Hope Street, near the university. In their final year, they resided with friends in a four-bedroom cottage called Balgove House on the Strathtyrum Estate. These experiences add to the rich history and traditions shared by students at the University of St Andrews.

Following their graduation, Prince William and Princess Kate have maintained a close connection with the university. They have revisited St Andrews on numerous occasions, including a visit shortly before their royal wedding in 2011. In 2021, the couple took a trip down memory lane during their tour of Scotland. While it is uncertain whether Lady Louise and her younger brother James, Earl of Wessex, will undertake full-time royal responsibilities after their university studies, it is likely that they will not become working royals. With the understanding that they are destined to work for a living, their upbringing reflects a decision made by their mother, the Duchess of Edinburgh, to not use HRH titles.

For the University of St Andrews, securing the top spot in both the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide and the Guardian University Guide is undoubtedly a moment of immense pride. This astounding accomplishment cements St Andrews’ position as a leader in higher education and affirms its commitment to academic excellence. Lady Louise Windsor’s journey at St Andrews is just one example of the university’s ability to attract and cultivate exceptional talent. As it continues to shape the lives of its students, St Andrews holds its place as a symbol of educational distinction and a testament to the power of a world-class institution.
